Editorial Methodology
How We Research & Rate Gear
Our editorial methodology — fully transparent, fully repeatable.
The short version: We don’t have a warehouse full of gear or unlimited budget to test everything personally. Instead, we do what data analysts do — we systematically mine large volumes of real-world user data to find the signal in the noise. The result is more reliable than any single person’s test.
Our 5-Step Research Process
1
Review Aggregation
We collect reviews from Amazon (verified purchases only), REI, Backcountry, and community sources like Reddit’s r/ultralight and r/CampingandHiking. For most products we analyze 100–400+ reviews before writing anything.
2
Pattern Analysis
We categorize feedback by theme: weight, durability, ease of use, wind performance, fuel efficiency, cold weather performance, packability. We look for consistent patterns — not outliers. If 15% of users mention valve issues, that’s a finding worth reporting.
3
Spec Verification
We cross-reference all manufacturer claims against independent measurements from gear testing sites, YouTube reviews, and community weigh-ins. Claimed vs. real-world specs often diverge significantly.
4
Competitive Comparison
No product exists in a vacuum. We evaluate each item against its direct competitors across the same criteria. This is how we determine “best for whom” — a stove that’s best for thru-hikers might not be best for weekend car campers.
5
Rating & Writing
Our final ratings are based on weighted scores across all criteria. We’re explicit about who should buy and who should skip each product. We never give a vague “it depends” — we give a clear recommendation with clear reasoning.
How Our Ratings Work
All products rated out of 10 across these weighted criteria:
Gram weight, packed size, stuff sack included
Boil time, fuel efficiency, wind resistance, simmer control
Long-term reliability based on verified owner feedback
Setup time, learning curve, cold/gloved hand operation
Performance per dollar vs. direct competitors
